Rites held for Oscar Wood

Deacon Oscar Wood, Sr. was the youngest of eleven children, born to Joseph “Joe” and Louise “Lou” Watts Wood on May 21, 1916 In Charlotte County, Virginia.

He joined Saint Andrews Baptist Church at an early age and later became a deacon, where he remained a devoted member until his death.  Deacon Wood was also a faithfully and dedicated servant for God at the First Baptist Church Victoria, Virginia.

Deacon Wood served in the United States Army during World War II and received an Honorable Discharge on December 12, 1945.

He received his former education at the Charlotte County Training School.

He later graduated with a B.S. degree in Education from Saint Paul’s College and a Master’s degree from Virginia State College in Administration.  He taught History at Lunenburg High School for several years.  Deacon Wood became a Principal at Falling River Elementary School and later became assistant Principal at William Campbell High School.  He retired from the Campbell County School system in 1977.

He was a member of the Charlotte County M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia #146 for over sixty years.

Deacon Wood enjoyed playing cards, telling jokes, traveling and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Deacon Oscar Wood departed his earthly life and entered into eternal rest on October 4, 2015 at Retreat Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.

Deacon Wood was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 63 years, Ruth Callahan Wood, a son Oscar, Jr., one granddaughter, one great-grandson, all siblings and a special friend Geraldine Johns.

Deacon Wood leaves to cherish precious memories, devoted daughters, Lula Gaskin (Winston) and Beulah Morgan (Micheal), daughter-in-law, Patricia H. Wood, five grandchildren, Oscar Wood, III (Laura), Dr. Troy Morgan, Monsee’ Wood (Christy), Mica’ Morgan and Chanee’ Gaskin, two great-grandchildren Preston and Reagan Wood, nieces, nephews and a very devoted friend Edward Glasgow also wonderful caregivers Rosa Garland, Bessie Melody and Gail Lee.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, October 8, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at Saint Andrews Baptist Church, Cullen, with Reverend Dr. Maurice Finney, Pastor. Interment, Committal/Masonic Rites was at First Baptist Memorial Garden Cemetery, Victoria, VA.
