Lunenburg County’s Rocky Mill Road Convenience Center has opened.

The location, which opened on Thursday, Dec. 17, is the fifth convenience center in the county.

The site will be manned, and recycling is available. All paper and plastic is put in the same container, so officials ask that residents make sure their plastics are dry.

“The employees of CFS must go through the recycling to make sure that there is no contamination,” Beverley Hawthorne, the county’s economic and community development director, said in a statement. “Any contaminated product, plastic or paper, will be put into the landfill. So, please follow the guidelines for preparing your recycled products.”

Meanwhile, company construction debris and tires must be taken to the landfill.

The county is looking for property to establish two more collection sites – one east of State Route 138 between Brickland Road and St. John’s Church Road, and the other along Oral Oaks in the vicinity of Brickland Road. Anyone interested should contact Hawthorne at (434) 696-2546.

The current dumpster sites at Hoyles Store on state Route 49 and near the intersection of Braxton Road and Sheltons Road will remain open through Christmas. These dumpsters will be removed and the sites closed on Jan. 3.

Locals are being encouraged to report anybody who dumps trash on the ground, even if it is at the dumpster site. “Most of the time there is still room in the cans away from the road,” Hawthorne noted.

Hawthorne thanked the employees who work the sites and the residents who follow the rules about dumping trash.

“The efforts of both the workers and the citizens are making the duty of ‘taking the trash’ less of a ‘dirty job,’” she said. “The sites remain nice places to visit and their cleanliness reflects wonderfully on the county as a whole.”
