Rites held for Robert ‘Bob’ A. Overby, Jr.

Robert “Bob” A. Overby, Jr. died peacefully at home on December 29th in Kokomo, Indiana at the age of 83.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy (Callahan) Overby.  He is survived by his brother, George Overby (Willie Mae) of Victoria, Virginia, his sister-in-law, Ozie Jackson (the late Archie Jackson) of Kenbridge,VA, and brother-in-law, Eddie Roberston of Kenbridge,VA and his three children, W. Nadia Cannon (Rick) and Robin Lynn Overby, both of Kokomo, Michael Overby, of Indianapolis, and grandchildren, Blake Overby, of Columbus, Ohio, and Asia Clayton, of Fort Wayne, James Maurice Clayton, of Marion, Alexa Cannon, of Indianapolis, and Donavan Byas and Devin Thomas, of Columbus, Ohio, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death six sisters-in-law,Virginia Callahan, Dorothy Seward, Thelma Hudson, Mae Pearl Jackson, Viola Robrrtson and Eleanora Williams and three brothers-in-law John, Emmitt and James Callahan.

Robert was born in  Nottoway County, Virginia to Robert Overby, Sr. and Daisy (Ivey) Overby. After working briefly for Ford Motor Car Company, Hudson Motor Car Company and the Virginia Railroad, Robert enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952.  After 20 years of serving the country, Robert worked at Haynes International and retired after 18 years.

He married Lucy, his hometown sweetheart, in 1957. Over the next 49 years, the couple welcomed three children into their home and Robert set about teaching them the value of hard work, and the importance of family and showing kindness to others.

Robert had a love for aviation and was a recreational pilot for over 20 years. He received his prestigious FAA Airmen Certification and was recognized by the FAA for high standards in education, licensing and safety.  He was an active and dedicated member of Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the Usher Board and the Transportation Ministry for over 30 years.

A Homegoing Service was held on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, Kokomo, IN, with entombment in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial gifts to Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, 1599 E.
