After months of talks between the Victoria Town Council and the Lunenburg County Public Library System Inc. (LCPLS), the town has officially transferred and presented the deed to the Victoria Public Library.

The presentation came during the town council’s Feb. 14 meeting.

The decision to transfer the library’s ownership to LCPLS will give more control to the library to make necessary changes to “meet their needs,” said Town Manager Rodney Newton.

“Through working together, it was an opportunity that came up for them (LCPLS) to take ownership of the building,” he said.

The town will continue to allocate money toward maintaining the library in their annual budget, according to Newton. He said the amount typically varies but remains around $3,000 per year as the town has always covered some of the library’s costs.

The total allocation will continue to be reviewed annually, he said.

LCPLS is led by a seven-member board of trustees. Its mission statement says they work to make sure libraries “are administered efficiently, effectively and transparently.”

The town will also continue to help pay for utilities, a subject discussed at the town council’s November meeting.

The LCPLS board voted in September to accept the building as a gift from the town and offered $10 to buy the library, LCPLS Trustee Karen Scales said in November.

LCPLS will take on any major renovations.
