The Kenston Forest School (KFS) junior varsity (JV) softball team has opened the 2017 season with a 6-3 run, once again under the leadership of father-daughter coaching duo Tony Matthews and Kaitlyn Matthews.

“The job of the JV team is to be a player-feed system for the varsity, and although the JV team had four players pulled up, the majority of the players were coming back to continue to build the KFS program,” Tony Matthews said, adding that some new talent has also been added.

In the Lady Kavaliers’ most recent action Friday, they fell 10-2 to visiting Brunswick Academy.

Tony Matthews noted that despite the loss, Sydney Harmon went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

On April 5, Kenston Forest won 12-6 against visiting Richmond Christian School.

Matthews said Bailey Marshall pitched the whole game, and Harmon went 3-for-3 with six RBIs.

The Lady Kavs achieved a 12-6 home win against Fuqua School on April 3.

Matthews said his team’s lineup shifted in this game after key contributor Berkley Rose was pulled up to the varsity team.

He said Shelby Gunn moved across the diamond to shortstop and Mya Mahaney got the start at second base in Gunn’s normal slot.

MacKenzie Newcomb pitched well, he said, recording eight strikeouts, and the defense held up well with Gunn and Mahaney in the middle, Gracie Gunn in the outfield and Harmon and Kristin Sheffield on the corners.

The Lady Kavaliers host Suffolk Christian Academy on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. After nearly two weeks off, they visit Fuqua School on Tuesday, April 25.
