Dr. Joy Hurt, of Blackstone, will sign her recently-published book on Thursday, May 25, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Corner Kitchen at 101 S. Main St. in Blackstone. “The title says much about the content of the book: ‘What I Wish I had Known in 1989: Practical Advice for the Beginning Teacher.’ However, seasoned teachers will also enjoy the book as they reflect on their own careers in education,” according to the press release.

“Dr. Hurt shares insights that have contributed to her success based on her personal experiences as a teacher. She passes this information on in a short, practical, and highly readable book.”

A limited number of books will be available at the signing, but they can also be purchased at www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com and at www.joycefhurtbook.com. Those who have already purchased copies of the book are invited to bring them to the signing for Dr. Hurt’s inscription.”

According to the release, the book signing is sponsored by the Delta Alpha Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) Society International, an honor society for key women educators of which Dr. Hurt is a member. “She served a two-year term as president of this chapter. While completing her Ph.D., Dr. Hurt received significant grants from the DKG state organization based on her merit as a teacher, according to the release.

Hurt holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Longwood University. “Her Ph.D. in education is from Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Hurt has received various honors during her teaching career. Most recently, she received one of five statewide leadership awards for Outstanding Adjunct Faculty from the Virginia Community College System. Dr. Hurt has also been honored internationally with an invitation to present her paper on Charles Dickens’ Bleak Houseat an international Dickens conference that she attended in Thessaloniki, Greece,” according to the release.

Hurt has had a variety of teaching experiences during her career that began in 1989.

“In Prince Edward County, she taught grades 8-11 and coordinated the high school’s gifted program. In addition to teaching English at the high school level, she has been an adjunct English and humanities instructor for Southside Virginia Community College.”
