Staunton River State Park, located at 1170 Staunton Trail, Scottsburg, will hold a star gazing session Friday from 9-11 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Those interested should meet at the visitor’s center.

“Enjoy an evening under the stars,” park officials said. “Join astronomers from CHAOS (Chapel Hill Astronomical and Observational Society) on the field and get a view of Staunton River State Park like you’ve never seen it before. This is an opportunity to gaze at the night sky’s celestial bodies through high powered telescopes with the guidance of seasoned astronAomers. You are welcome to bring your own telescope or binoculars. Please dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared for mosquitoes. Please park in the visitor center or swimming pool parking lot and not on the observational field.”

On Saturday, the park will hold an “ABC Scavenger Hunt” from 9-11 a.m. at the park.

Those interested should meet at the visitor’s center.

“Ready to hunt down the alphabet? You (or your group) get an inventory from the ranger and then you’re off,” park officials said. “The object of the game is to find something located in the park that begins with each letter of the alphabet. You’ll have a checklist and be able to take a picture of each item. Prizes will be given for the most items found, the quickest time, and the most unique item found.”
