A 48-year-old Kenbridge man charged with assaulting a Victoria Police Department sergeant following a hit and run and a vehicle pursuit involving police has been indicted by a grand jury in Lunenburg Circuit Court on felony charges in connection to the incident.

William Elwood Glass “was indicted on Aug. 7 on the felony charges of felony elude police and assault and batter (of) a law enforcement officer from the offense on May 25, 2017,” said Lunenburg County Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Clement. “The misdemeanors of driving on (a) suspended license and reckless driving (more than 20 mph above limit), which do not require an indictment, are also pending in circuit court.

Glass reportedly struck

a vehicle in Kenbridge, leaving the scene of the incident at approximately 9:20 p.m., according to Victoria Police Chief Keith Phillips.

Victoria Police Sgt. Daniel Medlin was on duty and attempted to stop Glass in the vehicle he was driving, a 2002 blue Chevrolet Blazer, Phillips said.

However, Glass continued driving and Medlin continued his pursuit.

The pursuit continued through Nottoway Falls Road and would soon end on Marshalltown Road, at the intersection of Pleasant Oak Road and Marshalltown Road, Phillips said.

Glass’ vehicle ran off of the road, causing it to flip upside down, Phillips said.

Medlin and a Virginia State Police trooper arrived on the scene and attempted to pull Glass from the vehicle, Phillips said. Glass escaped from the vehicle.

Medlin attempted to take Glass into custody, Phillips said, causing a struggle to ensue. Glass then allegedly assaulted Medlin.

“He was also indicted on Aug. 7 for aggravated malicious wounding — the incident that occurred on March 10, 2017 in which Shawn Reeves was the victim of being hit with a cane and causing lacerations to his knee requiring stitches and removal of pieces of wood from his leg,” Clement said. “I am waiting to hear from his defense attorney to set a trial date.”

Glass was not in possession of any weapons during the May incident, Phillips said.

Glass escaped on foot and was pursued by Virginia State Police, the Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Office, Victoria Police Department and Kenbridge Police Department, Phillips said. Glass would later be discovered Friday evening, Phillips said.

Medlin was transported to the VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill on Thursday for minor injuries, Phillips said. He was released that night.

Glass was later found and transported to the Piedmont Regional Jail on May 26 between 5:30 and 6 p.m. less than half of a mile from the scene of the Marshalltown Road incident, Phillips said.

Glass is charged with felony assault of a police officer, felony eluding of police, driving on a suspended driver’s license after a prior DUI conviction, reckless driving by speed, two counts of capias, driving without a safety belt, failure to obey highway signs and failure to drive on the right side of the highway, Phillips said.
