Pirates of the Pan

On March 14, students and staff at Lunenburg middle and high schools attended assembly programs sponsored by the Lunenburg Charity Fund (LCF). They enjoyed an educational program entitled “Pirates of the Pan” provided through the efforts of Young Audiences of Virginia, a nonprofit organization which works to inspire students in and through the arts. Students learned about the diversity of people of the West Indies through drums or pans. They experienced how the sounds of Africa, Europe, and South America combine, in their multicultural connection, to create the sounds of the islands. While drums were banned at times by governments and countries for fear of uprisings, the audience learned how pans became the popular instruments they are today with our island neighbors to the south. John Long, principal of Central High School, reported that the performance was very well received and enjoyed by all. He further stated that the generosity of the LCF was very much appreciated for making the funds available for such programs. This is the third year the LCF has sponsored educational assembly programs for our school system. Reginald S. Davis, Director of Lunenburg School Administrative Services, echoed these sentiments. Lunenburg Middle School Principal Dr. Sharon Stanislas stated the program provided cultural enrichment for the students, while being inspiring, motivational, entertaining and enjoyable. She indicated the staff look forward to and welcome the opportunity the LCF affords to present these programs She further commented the programs provided opportunities for students they might otherwise not experience.
