Students with Kindness Matters at Central High School (CHS), a club that focuses on community service and bullying prevention, honored those who died during the Columbine High School shooting April 20, 1999.

The CHS students made pinwheels and placed them along the outside of the school. The below statement, read by student Hailey Bayne, honors those who have been affected by the shooting at Columbine High School, and the school shootings that followed. “On April 20th 1999 two students opened fire at Columbine High School in Colorado,” Bayne read Friday. “In this senseless tragic act 13 students were killed. Sadly that terrible day became the marker for many school shootings that followed: Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Parkland and numerous others. In remembrance of the lives lost, we wrote the victims names on pinwheels and placed them on the lawn early this morning. It was very sad looking up the names of all 208 victims since Columbine and emotional for the ones as they meticulously wrote each name, none of us could even imagine how the families of the victims felt losing their child they believed were in a safe educational environment. Our hearts reach out to the families of these students. Hopefully an open dialogue develops among students and law makers. So today we remember those who are gone and we make every effort (to) make our world a better place, so register to vote, become involved and be kind to others. We will now pause and have 13 seconds of silence in remembrance of the 13 lives lost in the shooting at Columbine.”
