The Lunenburg Girls’ Softball (LGS) Ponytails All-Star team did not end up winning the state title this year, but the girls put on an exciting, competitive display for the home crowd during the 2018 Virginia Dixie Softball Ponytails X-Play State Tournament at Bolter Field in Kenbridge.

The LGS Ponytails started strong, defeating Halifax American 6-1. LGS Assistant Commissioner Tim Fowler noted this win came about due to strong pitching and solid defense.

Lunenburg experienced its first loss Saturday, but Prince George needed more than the standard six innings to win, edging out the home team 9-8 in the seventh inning.

On Sunday, the LGS All-Stars played Clarksville and fell behind before climbing back into the game, tying things up 7-7. This game also went to a seventh inning, during the top of which Clarksville went up 9-7.

Facing elimination, Lunenburg came through in the clutch. One player after another batted her teammate in, including Caley Stokes, who hit the walk-off double that brought home the winning run for a 10-9 victory.

Monday featured a rematch with Prince George that had a more decisive conclusion, however, as Lunenburg fell 13-7.

Prince George was set to take on undefeated Amelia in the championship round on Tuesday.
