Central golf takes third in state

Central High School’s varsity golf team again proved itself to be among the best Class 1 squads in the state with its performance in the Virginia High School League Class 1 state tournament Monday at Lonesome Pine Country Club in Big Stone Gap. The Chargers placed third in the state tournament for the second straight season.

They shot a combined score of 344 during the 18-hole event that featured eight teams. George Wythe High School, of Wytheville, claimed first with a 310, and Auburn High School shot a 327 for second.

Producing the best individual score for Central was sophomore Hogan Whitlow, who shot an 82. Junior Cole Williams, the 2018 Region 1-B Player of the Year, shot an 84, senior Thomas McDaniel recorded an 88, and senior Joseph McDaniel registered a 90 to round out the Chargers’ top four individual scores.
