The Lunenburg County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office has announced the resignation of assistant prosecutor Baxter Stegall as he takes a new career opportunity in North Carolina beginning June 1.

Stegall has been with the office since February 2018, but first moved to Southside Virginia in 1998, and has lived here for 22 years. Stegall said he will be returning to his hometown of Monroe, North Carolina, just east of Charlotte, to join Stegall Petroleum, Inc.

The family business is in petroleum distribution, and has a number of convenience stores as well as an active farm and fleet sales division. His duties will include sales, regulatory compliance, management, and he will serve as in-house counsel.

“I’m excited about going to work with my father and grandfather. My grandfather will be 90 years old this year and still works every day. I look forward to learning from both of them,” Stegall said. “They have been in business together since the early 1970s, and this is a continuation of a line of businesses that dates back to my great-grandfather’s general store from the 1930s. My wife, Kellie and I, thought about it long and hard and decided it would be best for us and our future family.”

Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Clement said he was greatly disappointed to lose Stegall, but was happy for him that he had such a tremendous opportunity.

“I cannot blame him one bit for moving forward in an obviously successful career as a businessman, however, it will be a heavy loss for Lunenburg County and our local system of justice. Local law enforcement and I have come to rely upon him so much with his expertise in and out of the courtroom,“ Clement said.

Clement said he is in the process of recruiting another assistant as soon as possible.
