Regular varsity basketball seasons have come and gone in Lunenburg County, and now the most exciting part of the season is here — the playoffs.

Although both the girls and boys varsity basketball teams at Central High School were supposed to begin their playoff games on Tuesday, Winter Storm Olympia provided a snow day for the teams postponing the first games of the Conference 42 playoffs until Wednesday night.

The Central Lunenburg boys team will host Carver Academy at 7 p.m. Wednesday, while the girls team will travel to Middlesex for a 7 p.m. game.

The Central boys team finished its regular season 9-10.

Central took a close 49-42 loss in its last game, when the team hosted Prince Edward on senior day.

If Central does win its first-round game of the conference tournament, it will advance to the second round on Thursday. If they defeated Carver Academy on Wednesday, the team will face off against the winner of the Mathews/King & Queen Central game.

Mathews would have to lose for the Chargers to be able to host the second-round game. The time for second-round games have yet to be determined.

The Lady Chargers finished their regular season with a 5-12 record.

In their last game of the season, the Lady Chargers fell 60-52 in overtime at Prince Edward.

If the Lady Chargers win against Middlesex, they would advance to the next round on Thursday and play the winner of the West Point/King & Queen game.
