Southside Electric Cooperative (SEC) recently launched a new scholarship available to students pursuing educational opportunities beyond high school. Several $1,000 scholarships will be awarded annually to high school seniors who reside in homes receiving electric service from SEC.

Funded by proceeds from SEC’s newly-established Scholarship Fund Golf Classic and other donations, the scholarship represents a further expansion of the cooperative’s many community outreach programs.

Similar to the long-established scholarship offered by the VA, MD & DE Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC), SEC’s new scholarship will also be available to high school seniors whose primary residence is served by the cooperative.

Applicants must be entering their first semester at a college or technical/trade school in the fall of 2016.

With the recent launch of Virginia’s first Power Line Worker Training School at Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) in Fort Pickett, SEC encourages applications from students interested in the 11-week credential program. Scholarships must be used towards tuition, student fees, lodging/meals or textbooks.

Students may apply by submitting completed applications via email at public.relations@sec.coop, by mail or hand-delivery no later than 5 p.m. on April 1, to SEC’s Headquarters Office: 2000 West Virginia Ave., Crewe, VA 23930. For complete application instructions, visit www.sec.coop/Scholarship, call at 1-800-552-2118, or visit any SEC district office.

With the success of SEC’s Scholarship Fund Golf Classic in 2015, the tournament will proceed as an annual event to benefit SEC’s Education Scholarship Fund. This year’s tournament will be held on Friday, May 20 at The Manor Golf Club in Farmville.
