The Central High School varsity baseball team went neck-and-neck in its Thursday game against Nottoway High School, but the Chargers’ consistency in scoring is what helped the team edge Nottoway 13-12 in the end.

With the win, Central improves to 3-1 overall.

The Chargers faced a tie game at the end of the sixth inning, but were able to rally for one final run in the seventh to take the win.

The Chargers only had one inning where they did not score any runs. That inning was the second, following a four-run first inning.

Central then scored once in the third, twice in the fourth and fifth innings, before scoring three runs in the sixth inning.

Malik Foster, Jeffrey Goodwin, Riley Hart, Nate Nowlin and Josh Paynter each scored two runs for the Chargers. Christian Hall, Ethan Hoover and L.J. Watson followed with a run apiece.

Coach Mike Atkins could not be reached for comment on the team’s win.

The Chargers entered spring break this week with three straight wins.

Before winning against Nottoway, the team took a 12-9 win over Buckingham and a 7-2 win over Prince Edward. Central’s only loss was to Randolph-Henry in its first game of the season. The Statesmen shutout the Chargers 14-0 in that game.

Next up, Central will host William Campbell on Monday at  5 p.m.

They will then host Charles City County at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, before traveling to Bluestone the following day for a 5 p.m. game.
