The Virginia High School League (VHSL) Executive Committee has announced Dr. John “Billy” Haun as its next executive director, according to a March 30 press release.
Haun brings 36 years of leadership and education experience to the VHSL, the release stated.
His new position will be effective July 1.
He will replace Ken Tilley, who is retiring effective June 30, after having served 30 years with the league, the most recent 22 years as executive director for the VHSL.
“On behalf of the VHSL Executive Committee, I am pleased to welcome Dr. Billy Haun as its next executive director,” said Jim Stemple, chairman of the VHSL executive committee.
“As demonstrated through his highly successful career, Dr. Haun has a commitment to VHSL’s core mission and a capacity to strategically guide the League forward.”
“Billy Haun certainly has strong credentials and qualities that fit the position well,” said current VHSL Executive Director Ken Tilley.
“I believe he has a good vision for the direction the VHSL should take in the future, and he can lead the membership in building upon the League’s strengths to meet the challenges ahead,” he said.
The selection was made after a comprehensive national search and selection process, the release stated.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to serve as executive director of the Virginia High School League,” said Haun.
“I want to thank the executive committee for having the confidence in me to work with staff and the executive committee to continue providing outstanding service to Virginia’s students and the League membership. I also would like to thank Mr. Ken Tilley for his years of dedicated leadership to Virginia’s schools and students and wish him the best on his pending retirement.”
Haun has extensive experience at the school, division and state levels.
He is currently the chief academic officer/assistant superintendent for instruction of the Virginia Department of Education, a statewide leadership position that has given him the opportunity to work with all areas of the commonwealth.
His previous experiences include serving as an assistant superintendent, middle and high school principal, assistant high school principal, teacher, athletic director and coach (academic and athletic), according to the release.
During his tenure as principal of Monticello High School (Albemarle County), Haun served as chairman of the VHSL Jefferson District, chairman of VHSL Region II, and two years (2005-06 and 2006-07) on the VHSL Executive Committee.
Haun earned a Doctor of Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of Virginia, a Master of Science in Education Administration and Supervision from Shenandoah University and a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) assisted the VHSL with the search process.
