Victoria to receive police cars

After two years of waiting, Victoria has received a grant that will allow the town to purchase and equip two police cars.

The $65,000 United States Department of Agriculture grant calls for a $27,000 match by Victoria, Town Manager Rodney Newton told the council at its Tuesday, April 12, meeting.

“We were already looking at buying a used car,” Newton noted.

The town is now getting updated quotes on installing the equipment in the vehicles.

The grant means the town will now basically get two cars for what it was going to spend on one, Newton said.

Victoria applied for the grant two years ago, but only recently learned the town had received it, Newton said.

The delay, however, did not diminish enthusiasm.

“I think that’s great,” said Mayor Carol Watson when council was told of the award.
