LCHS essay contest winners announced

Winners of the 2016 Lunenburg County Historical Society Essay Contest are pictured with Brenda Wade, far left, who coordinated the contest for the society. The contest was advertised to eighth-grade students who are residents of Lunenburg County; contestants could be either public- or private-school students or home-schooled. Over 100 entries were initially submitted. The topic was “How My Family Came to Lunenburg” and provided interesting reading for the judges. Winners pictured are, from left, first place, Mary Catherine Abernathy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Abernathy, of Victoria; second place, Savanna Fowler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Fowler, of Kenbridge; third place, Cszariah Eggleston, daughter of Tiffany Eggleston, of Victoria; and honorable mention, Jonathan Hatchett, son of Mrs. and Mrs. Thomas Hatchett, of Kenbridge. Winners received certificates and monetary awards. Willard Hazlewood, seated, LCHS projects committee chairman, oversaw the judging of the contest.
