Why? Well, why not?

As you may have read in last week’s paper, Nottoway County officials have asked their Lunenburg counterparts to support a proposal to have a portion of lottery sales returned to the general fund of the localities where the sales originated.

The proposal would call for an allocation of 5 percent of total lottery sales to be returned.

While some may not agree Lunenburg should jump on board with the proposal, I ask, “Why not?”

The revenue that would return to localities would provide smaller governments with funds they could use to better our communities. Especially when living in a rural county, such as Lunenburg, smaller governments normally cannot afford the needed funds to help with improvements.

As we all are aware, the county’s board of supervisors is always being asked for money — organizations needing donations to make an event happen, groups asking for support in helping with growth, residents wanting this or that to happen around town that would take money away from what our governments have budgeted for during the year. So, why not encourage acceptance of a proposal that could provide them with more money that would go to helping the county and those in it?

We should all at least consider how it could benefit our community.
