Barber shop comes to Victoria

Kevin Berry is a happy man.

And why shouldn’t he be — he’s where he wants to be and he’s doing what he loves.

He’s owner of Berry’s Barber Shop, located in Victoria.

Mayor Carol Watson said his is the only barber shop in town. “I just want the men to know there is a barber back in town,” she said during this month’s town council meeting.

And so he is.

“I’m home, I can tell you that,” he said.

His shop is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m.

The shop has been open for about a month now, and business has been good, Berry said.

The first two weeks were “real good;” the third, slower, but, Berry said, “It’s going to balance out.”

He’s operated a shop in town before, and he has a following and clientele that has stayed with him through the years, no matter where he worked from.

Berry, 39, has been a barber approximately 20 years and has worked in the area, including Keysville and Chase City.

This shop is next door to Timmy’s Grocery on Court Street. That’s not a coincidence.

“It’s been family and home to me,” Berry said. “Timmy and Linda Clark, they really brought me home, I can tell you that.”

There will be a ribbon cutting for the business in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, Berry continues to celebrate.

“I’ve always loved cutting hair. When I wake up in the morning I’m ready to come to work,” Berry said. “It puts a smile on my face to know I’ve satisfied the customer when I turn them around in the chair.”

Not that he’s bragging. “I love what I’m doing,” he said. “If that’s bragging, that’s as far as I’m going to push it.”
