Lack of team marks the end of an era

Dear Editor,

This is a sad day for Lunenburgers.

It was announced last week at Lunenburg Middle School that there will be no football team this year. There were not enough young men who came out to play middle school football.

For those of us who grew up in Lunenburg and have loved Charger football, we should note this date. A lot of changes have taken place surrounding football in this county since I was a Charger. Many coaches have come and gone from recreational league football as well as Charger football.

The one constant, unchanging force behind Lunenburg football for as long as I can remember, at least since 1986, is Al McCrimmon. It is my opinion, and fear, that without the strong background that Coach McCrimmon and the middle school coaching staff instilled in the players, the legacy that the Charger team has been known for, for so many years, will begin to decline.

I hope that next year and the years after prove this to be a solo incident. Time will tell.

For now, I would like to acknowledge the many years of hard work and dedication that McCrimmon and Eddie Jeter have given to numerous young men, and say thank you for your time, and all that you have done to help prepare our young middle schoolers to become Chargers and winners in life.
