Consider event permit

The Lunenburg County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for public input on an ordinance creating an events permit that would be required for large events held in the county’s agricultural district — for events expecting to attract more than 100 people at a time.

While some may not want the permit created due to loud noise or more traffic around town, we think there are many benefits to the proposal.

For one thing, the proposal states that no events/activities at an event can be closer than 300 feet to a residential use unless the owner grants permission. This would ensure that no event would cause residents any concern of events being on their property. They could possibly still hear the event going on or even see it, but the pros are something that should be considered.

This permit could help keep larger events under control. Considering that more people can sometimes lead to more mess, cleanup and conflict, the event permit would be a process that only those truly committed to holding a community event would want to go through.

That is the main reason community members who may not be for the permit approval should take a step back and reconsider it.

Think about our community and think about how we can all benefit before sticking with a no on this one. It could be a great thing for the entire county.
