Merny Erby, regent of the William Taylor Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), welcomed Commander Claude Tomlinson of VFW Post 9954 in Lunenburg County to the chapter’s meeting on Nov. 12. Tomlinson, a member with three generations in the VFW post, is also chaplain of local American Legion Post 147. He has served his country in Germany and more recently in Iraq. In his presentation to the DAR, Tomlinson gave a history of the creation of Veterans Day, explaining that it was always observed on Nov. 11, the date of the armistice agreement that ended World War I.
