On Saturday, a good man received a well-deserved honor. Tony Matthews was bestowed the prestigious Citizen of the Year Award from his peers in the Lunenburg County Chamber of Commerce. According to Chamber Treasurer Bernice Thompson, who presented Matthews with the award, he’s very active in his community, serving on the Kenbridge Volunteer Fire Department, working in various capacities to improve the lives of youth through recreational sports and has our nation in the armed forces, fighting in Operation Desert Storm. Arguably more commendable, Matthews takes great care of this family. According to Thompson, in 2014, he and his wife became guardians of his sister’s four children, who passed away from cancer, along with her husband, Matthews’ brother in law. “Lots of school-aged and young adults look up to Tony Matthews as a role model and a mentor,” Thompson said. We think they have good reason to admire such a fine citizen leader of Lunenburg. (Send us a “Pic Me Up” with names and information to PicMeUp@KVDispatch.com)
