Lunenburg native West Pulliam is now treating patients at the Centra Medical Group in Burkeville.
“I came back (for professional reasons) but it’s also home,” said Pulliam, who previously worked at the Lunenburg Medical Center. “I know everybody and it’s comfortable.”
Pulliam, who was raised in Lunenburg, received his first Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Hampden-Sydney College, according to a press release. Pulliam then received another bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Jefferson College of Health Sciences.
Pulliam then attended the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where he received his master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
Pulliam said he knew he wanted to do something in the medical field after finishing college, but he wasn’t sure exactly what.
“When I first got out, I was potentially looking at physical therapy,” Pulliam said. “As luck would have it, Jefferson (College) was opening up one of the first physicians assistant programs in the state at the time. I was in the first cohort of students and was part of the second graduating class at Jefferson.”
After graduating from Jefferson, Pulliam returned to Lunenburg, where he worked in family practice at Lunenburg Medical Center for eight years.
While working for Lunenburg Medical, Pulliam took classes to obtain his master’s degree.
After working at the Lunenburg Medical Center, Pulliam worked in the emergency department at VCU Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill.
He’s been working at Centra Medical Group in Burkeville for a few weeks now.
Pulliam said that while he was never very far away, it feels good to come back home and closer to where he grew up and back in family practice.
“I’ve been (working for Centra) for about three weeks now, and it’s a very positive experience. (Everyone) is very welcoming and easy to work with,” Pulliam said. “It’s been a good experience so far (during) the first few weeks working at Centra and I look forward that it will continue that way.”
