Brightly-painted rocks have been popping up all over Victoria thanks to a new group dedicated to promoting peace and positivity.
Victoria Rocks is a group founded by Kenneth Hansen that involves painting rocks and hiding them for others to find.
After a rock is found, members of the group like to post their finds to Victoria Rocks’ Facebook page.
The concept is simple, but it has brought smiles to many faces and reminds the people of Victoria that kindness still exists.
“Look up, look down, in trees, in flower pots, on trains and window sills, monkey bars and soccer fields, in parks and on monuments. Find them, post them, keep them or hide again,” Hansen posted to Facebook page.
Victoria Rocks was born after Hansen discovered the social media sites of two similar groups: Appomattox Rocks and Walton Rocks.
Other rock painting groups exist all over the United States.
“I just thought it would be something positive for the kids,” said Hansen. He said he wanted to find a way to keep children active and having fun during the summer.
“It’s a great activity — especially for children. Every child who has been involved thus far has enjoyed even just finding the rocks,” said Amanda Jones, one of the group’s members.
So far, Hansen has hidden two batches — or about 24 rocks.
Although he has painted a few rocks himself, Hansen charged his friend Kathleen Denman Baldwin with painting the rocks.
While many of the group members choose to hide their rocks again after they discover them for the next person to discover, the rocks painted by the talented Baldwin are often kept and treasured.
