Tips on beating the heat

It’s been hot — and I mean really hot outside. The temperature gauge in my car recently read 102 degrees Fahrenheit. I had to look at it twice just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things.

When it gets this hot, we need to take extra precautions.

Here are a few tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe during the summer heat.

Stay indoors where it’s air-conditioned as much as possible. Drink plenty of fluids.  Never leave people or pets in a parked vehicle. Take frequent breaks when outdoors and wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunblock and light-colored, loose-fitting clothes.

For those who are elderly or ill, it’s a good idea to have friends or family check in with you a couple of times a day.

At the first signs of heat illness (dizziness, nausea, headaches or muscle cramps) move to a cool location, rest for a few minutes and slowly drink a cool beverage. If you don’t feel better in a few minutes, seek medical attention immediately.

Pets need special care too. Never leave your pet in a parked car, not even for a few minutes.

A doghouse has little ventilation and can just make the heat worse, so be sure your pet has other shade. Provide lots of water and plenty of shade, trees and tarps are ideal.

You might even consider a fan to provide cool breezes during the summer. Our dogs love this. Limit exercise to early morning or late evening hours when temperatures are a bit more moderate and remember that asphalt gets hot enough to burn your pet’s paws.

Speaking of pets, if you’re ever looking for a “fur-ever” friend to brighten your days, visit the Southside SPCA website at www.southsidespca.org.

You’ll also find information about their breed, age and temperament. Of course, donations are always appreciated.
