Members of the Lunenburg County Historical Society enjoyed the group’s annual fall tour, this year to Maymont in Richmond, where they pursued the connection between Lunenburg County and Maymont owner, Sallie May Dooley. Mrs. Dooley was born in Lunenburg County. Her father Dr. Henry May was a prominent physician at Lunenburg Courthouse, where the family home still stands in the village. Maymont estate bears the Lunenburg “May” name, the maiden name of Mrs. Dooley. Upon their deaths, Mrs. Dooley, with her husband James Henry Dooley, bequeathed their Maymont estate to the City of Richmond for use as a park. Director/Curator at Maymont, Dale Wheary, who also has Lunenburg connections, led the private tour through the mansion. Tour group members are shown on the front steps of the lavish Maymont mansion. Pictured are, clockwise from lower left, Tammy Gaulding, Angie Tharpe, Buck Tharpe, Virginia Grogan, Anne Gaulding, Bob Kaiser, Cookie Currin, Dale Wheary, June Evans, Mac Grogan, Donna Kaiser, Martha Mead, Judy Shepherd, Pat Israel, and Anne Hamlett.
