Megan Dech, a senior at Central High School, has all of the responsibilities of other students, studying for tests, participating in extracurricular activities and taking part in student athletics.
However, Dech, who has a unique position as student liaison on the Lunenburg County School Board, is able to have a voice and make a difference for classmates and other Central students.
Dech attends board meetings and offers comments about student issues. She said the position gives her a voice to discuss things with school leaders they may not have known otherwise.
“My responsibility is to give the school board an inside look on what takes place in our school, things they are seemingly unaware about,” Dech said.
She has had the title since last May, and said the position has been nothing short of impactful.
“The most rewarding aspect of this position is being able to make a positive impact on our school community,” Dech said.
Though Dech balances her position with other responsibilities as a student, it’s not all work. Dech likes to catch episodes of her favorite shows.
“A TV show I can never miss is Grey’s Anatomy,” Dech said. “Every Thursday!”
Dech, who has also taken part in the school’s girls varsity basketball team, brings her ability to speak up and good attitude to school board meetings in addition to classes. When asked what three words best describe her, Dech said, “I would consider myself goofy, kind and honest.”
Dech said continuing to bring change and a unique point of view to school board meetings is often inspired and empowered by lessons she learned from her family. “The best lesson I’ve been taught is by my mother, Harriett Dech, that nothing is simply handed to you, you have to work hard to earn what you deserve,” Dech said.
