Heavy rainfall and overflow from the Meherrin River caused flooding and several roads to close over the weekend.

The road conditions also prompted Lunenburg County Public Schools (LCPS) to close Friday.

A hazardous weather outlook is still in effect for the county as of Monday, according to the National Weather Service, calling for “locally heavy rainfall with minor flooding is possible this afternoon into early this evening as thunderstorms drift southward.”

Severe weather is also set to be expected later in the week, the hazardous weather outlook noted.

“A few strong thunderstorms will be possible on Wednesday as a cold front crosses the region,” the outlook cited.

County Administrator Tracy Gee said the county alerted residents, and urged them to stay cautious on the roads.

“The County did issue a CodeRED announcement through our phone notification system on Friday to warn citizens to be cautious of possible flooding and advise them to approach low-lying areas with caution,” Gee said. “Schools were closed on Friday due to road closures from the flooding.”
