Container First Services (CFS) and representatives of Lunenburg County presented a new vehicle to Lunenburg Health Services (LHS) May 22, a nonprofit organization that has provided health services for people in Lunenburg for more than 70 years.

The vehicle, a 2018 Ford Escape, will be used by LHS nurse Deborah Craven to travel to homes around the county to treat patients.

The vehicle, which cost CFS approximately $22,000, was part of a series of donations CFS and the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors distributed to various organizations.

Recently, the two organizations presented $18,383 to install equipment for a portable radio communication tower to be used in the county by first responders and $10,000 to Lunenburg County Public Library Systems, which was split evenly between Ripberger Public Library and Victoria Public Library for renovations.

Jane Williams Woolard, a member of the LHS board and the daughter of LHS Founder Robert Williams, said the donation to aid Craven could not have happened to a better nurse. Woolard recalled Craven kneeling at Woolard’s mother’s feet while treating her, listening and encouraging her.

“I couldn’t even say enough,” Woolard said. “She and (Secretary) Janet (Watson) are truly the heart of

the organization.”

Lunenburg Health Services provides nursing services for people who cannot afford health services, including assisting and monitoring people with critical and chronic illnesses, and offering equipment loans to patients’ homes or at its office at 1428 Sixth St.

Webb praised Lunenburg County administration for its distribution of funds, noting that each organization that has received it does a lot of good in the community.

Craven estimated that in a year, she drives approximately 20,000 miles. All of her patients are within the county line, but the miles add up when frequently visiting patients who cannot leave home.

She said that LHS has provided vehicles before, but said the donation came as a surprise.

“This is the first time someone else has provided one,” Craven said, “so we didn’t have to use fund monies for (it).”
