Softball coaches in the James River District (JRD) recognized Central High School’s varsity softball team with three 2018 all-district selections, including two on the first team.

Lady Chargers senior pitcher Hailey Bayne and senior outfielder Kaylee Williams made the first team, and senior second baseman Brittany Tomlinson made the second team.

“The James River District is very competitive,” Central Head Coach Karen McGrath said. “In most cases there were nine players going for one first team and one second team spot for one position. We were fourth in the district, and I was pleased we had three make the all-district team(s).”

In her four-year tenure on the team, Bayne has been either an all-conference or all-district player each year.

As for what led coaches to vote Bayne to the all-district first team this season, McGrath said, “Hailey had over 180 strikeouts this year. Her batting average was competitive too.”

Williams has received either all-conference or all-district recognition every year she has been on the varsity squad.

Voting coaches acknowledged her remarkable play on defense.

“Kaylee had no errors in the outfield this year,” McGrath said. “She is very fast, has a great glove and strong throw. She is always there to back up left field and right field too.”

McGrath noted this was Tomlinson’s first year receiving an all-district honor.

“She made some great plays at second this year, and her batting average was comparable to other second basemen in the district,” McGrath said.
