Reason to unite

Anyone who has been out to see some Dixie Youth Baseball in Victoria this past weekend knows that the following commendation is well earned. We would like to applaud the Lunenburg County Youth Baseball League (LCYBL) and its participants this year. Much thought and planning is put into events and programs that can help bring the community together. The LCYBL and its all-star teams have done a fantastic job in making that objective of unity a reality. Since Friday, the LCYBL has been hosting in Victoria the Dixie Youth Baseball Instructional and Major League All-Star District 5 double-elimination tournaments side-by-side at Neblett Field and Lenhart Field, respectively. The games have ranged from exciting nail-biters to runaway routs, and the tourneys have given all baseball fans and team supporters reasons to cheer. These events offer an opportunity for the simple appreciation of sports in an innocent form, long before money and egos play a huge role as we know can be true at the professional and even lower levels. Adding significantly to the value of the experience for the Lunenburg community has been the excellent performance of Lunenburg’s Instructional and Majors all-star teams. Entering Tuesday’s action, the LCYBL Instructional All-Stars were 4-0, having outscored opponents by a combined 49-6, and were playing for the district title with a state tournament berth already in hand. The LCYBL Majors All-Stars were 2-1 and part of the final three with a shot at the district title and a state berth. Their one loss came by a narrow 6-5 margin in a dramatic showdown with the impressive Charlotte County All-Stars. The Lunenburg squads have had a significant crowd from the community populating the stands and lining the fields for their games, and these fans have not left disappointed. The teams’ performances are a testament to the tone of discipline set by Instructional All-Stars Manager Brian Nowlin and Majors All-Stars Manager Dee Hite. Lunenburg County has put its best foot forward in more ways than one during these tournaments, and we thank the Lunenburg County Youth Baseball League for making this possible.
