Living tradition

A history of Independence Day is included in the PBS special “A Capitol Fourth,” and it notes the following: “On July 8, 1776, the first public readings of the Declaration (of Independence) were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square to the ringing of bells and band music. One year later, on July 4, 1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with bonfires, bells and fireworks.”

It is incredible to see how faithfully we have maintained our traditions of celebrating independence. It is our hope that we all be equally faithful in maintaining the values that have allowed that freedom to endure. Have a meaningful, wonderful Fourth of July!
