The Lunenburg County Youth Baseball League (LCYBL) Machine Pitch All-Star team had yet to be defeated entering its contest Tuesday evening against the Dinwiddie American All-Stars.
After going 5-0 on its way to winning the District 5 championship, Lunenburg started 3-0 in the 2018 Virginia Dixie Youth Baseball Machine Pitch State Tournament in South Hill.
In those three state-level games, the LCYBL boys outscored their opponents 47-13.
“They’ve played excellent,” Lunenburg Coach David Clark said. “… We feel real good about them.”
In their state opener Saturday, the LCYBL All-Stars blew out the Clarksville All-Star team 19-1. The next day, they routed host South Hill 13-3.
The strongest competition Lunenburg had experienced through Monday came courtesy of the Charlotte County All-Stars, a team Lunenburg faced in the district tournament. The LCYBL boys defeated Charlotte County 13-1 back in district play and 15-9 on Monday.
“I’d say the competition has gotten a little tougher,” Clark said, comparing the state to the district level. “The other teams have gotten better, but we’re getting better every day.”
Charlotte County was set to play an elimination game Tuesday against the Blackstone All-Stars, the squad Lunenburg defeated to claim the district title.
The LCYBL All-Stars are two wins away from a berth in the 2018 Dixie Youth Baseball Machine Pitch World Series.
“We’re telling them every day, ‘Enjoy the moment,’ that nobody is handing out a state championship trophy, that they need to earn it,” Clark said.
