The Central High School varsity golf team played its second match of the 2018 regular season Thursday at Kinderton Country Club in Clarksville, improving its overall record to 3-1. The Chargers produced a team score of 177, finishing 30 strokes better than Nottoway High School, which ended up with a 207 score. Bluestone High School was just behind in third with a 209.

The individual scores of Central’s golfers ranged from 43 to 52.

“They performed well, always room for improvement,” Chargers Head Coach Richard McDaniel said, noting that his players’ scores were similar, in a way, to the ones generated last year. “We usually have at least four that played pretty close to each other, so they’re kind of grouped. The difference between our lowest score and highest score, as far as the scores that counted was only three strokes, which that can be a good thing — consistency — as long as everybody is shooting in the same range.”

Central’s No. 3 golfer Joseph McDaniel, a senior, and No. 4 golfer Hogan Whitlow, a sophomore, led the way for their team, each shooting 43s.

This meant they were in for a promotion for Tuesday afternoon’s match in Kenbridge against Buckingham County and Cumberland County high schools.

“Each match, I play them basically how they finish in the previous match,” Coach McDaniel said of all his players.

The other contributors to the Chargers’ team score this past Thursday were junior Cole Williams, the team’s No. 1 seed who shot a 45, and senior Thomas McDaniel, the team’s No. 2 seed who shot a 46. Rounding out the Chargers’ individual scores was junior Mason Elliott, who shot a 52.

Central will face Bluestone and Cumberland on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Farmville Municipal Golf Course.
