Man charged in fatal shooting

A South Carolina man was arrested and is expected to appear before the Lunenburg County General District Court Wednesday after the fatal shooting of a Kenbridge man Saturday.

Representatives of the Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Montai Maurice Mervin, 22 of Hardeeville, South Carolina was arrested in South Hill during a shooting reported at the 800 block of Sugar Hill Road in Lunenburg at approximately 11 p.m. Saturday.

Bryant Andre Craig Jr., 22, of Kenbridge, according to police had been shot and taken to Community Memorial Health Center in South Hill, where he was pronounced dead.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that a disagreement occurred during a social gathering  during which 22 year old Montai Maurice Mervin of Hardeeville, South Carolina fired four rounds from a rifle with all striking Craig,” police reported in the release. “Mervin then fled the scene.”

Police said Mervin was arrested in South Hill at approximately midnight, within the hour of the shooting, after a pursuit by multiple agencies that reportedly began in Brunswick after law enforcement spotted Mervin’s vehicle.

“The firearm has not yet been recovered,” police said.

“Mervin is currently being held at Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville with no bond for first degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony,” police said. “Mervin will appear before the Lunenburg County General District Court on Wednesday for advisement.”

Police said the investigation is still ongoing as to the exact events that occurred during the incident.
