A season that featured an outstanding rivalry between the varsity golf teams of Central High School and Randolph-Henry High School (R-H) included one final showdown between the squads Sept. 19 in the James River District tournament with the Chargers pulling out the win at Kinderton Country Club in Clarksville. After breaking Randolph-Henry’s 16-year-old district win streak earlier this season, Central had lost the subsequent three matches against the Statesmen, the last of which gave R-H its 19th straight regular season district title. But last week, the Chargers took home the district tournament title usually won by the Statesmen, shooting a 342 in an 18-hole round. R-H came in second with a 348. Central’s Joseph McDaniel shot a 79, Cole Williams shot an 80, Thomas McDaniel produced an 89 and Hogan Whitlow and Mason Elliott each recorded 94s. Austin Hall was not far behind with a 97. Central Head Coach Richard McDaniel said he was “very proud of their performance. Joseph, Cole and Thomas received all-district honors. We’re looking forward to playing the regional match.” The Virginia High School League Region 1B tournament is set for Monday at The Manor Golf Club in Farmville.
