Central High School’s varsity girls volleyball team defeated host Randolph-Henry High School 3-2 on Monday to end a losing streak that lasted three games.

With the victory, the Lady Chargers improved to 7-10 overall. They have one remaining scheduled regular season match, as they visit Nottoway High School on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Central Head Coach Alan Hershberger noted that he has seen a lot of improvement in his team over the course of the season and that the whole squad has really been stepping up.

“All of our seniors have stepped up this year, and the juniors have been working hard every day in practice and shown great improvement,” he said. “We’ve put a lot of responsibility on our setter, a sophomore, and she has risen to the challenge and done very well for us.”

The sophomore setter he was referring to is Macie Nash, the lone sophomore listed on the varsity roster, according to the district website.

Reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of the 2018 Lady Chargers, Hershberger said, “Our defense has been a strong point for us this year, we have been digging a lot of hard-hit balls and giving our team extra opportunities with hustle plays. Our serving has been off and on all year. We have a lot of players who are capable of going on long serving streaks, but we struggle with consistency.”
