Lunenburg County moves closer to revising its comprehensive plan, according to an update by the Commonwealth Regional Council during its Jan. 15 meeting.

According to a memorandum provided by Community Development Planner Andre V. Gilliam, joint working committee members, which includes representatives from the towns of Victoria and Kenbridge and Lunenburg County, had a revised draft of the plan that was scheduled to be provided Jan. 10.

A public hearing to adopt the comprehensive plan is expected to take place in the next few months, in the February-March timeframe, Gilliam cited in the memorandum.

A comprehensive plan outlines the goals and vision of a particular county.

Plans to strengthen the county economy, according to a presentation and joint work session during the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors meeting in November, include improving public infrastructure such as roads and utilities, promoting entrepreneurship, supporting area small businesses and attracting new industries and retail options.

The top five community issues reported by approximately 320 people who responded to a survey include employment opportunities, education, economic development, internet/cell service, retail and services, according to the presentation.

County residents who participated in workshops earlier this year for the comprehensive plan emphasized supporting economic growth while maintaining the rural and community-oriented characteristics of the county. Participants also emphasized removing vacant buildings and keeping out large landfills, according to the presentation.

“We did a Powerpoint where we gave a snapshot of what’s included in the plan,” CRC Executive Director Melody Foster said in November. “We wanted to give them some information about what’s included in the plan so far … We focused in on the land use section, special policy areas and goals, objectives and strategies.”
