Changes to Medicaid for the Commonwealth of Virginia officially took effect Jan. 1, allowing more people to be eligible for Medicaid than ever before.

The expansion for Medicaid coverage allows childless adults to qualify if their annual income is at or falls below $16,754. A family of three would be eligible for Medicaid if their annual income is at or falls below $28,677. A person with a disability is eligible if their annual income is at or falls below $16,754.

Lunenburg Department of Social Services (DSS) Director Dorothy Newcomb said the county has been receiving applications for Medicaid expansion, but said it was too soon to determine whether there has been a significant increase in applications for 2019 so far versus previous years.
