Earth Day is an annual event that is celebrated worldwide to make people more aware of the earth’s environment and gain an appreciation for our earth. Earth day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson and Congress approved that there be Earth Day in 1970.
A federal agency was also created to handle environmental issues, this is known as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
You can celebrate Earth Day by picking up trash you see laying around on the side of roads, in ponds, streams, lakes and beaches. Another idea is to plant a tree — according to the EPA one large tree can remove up to 26 pounds of carbon a year.
