The vacancy of an alleyway initially owned by the Town of Kenbridge was approved by members of the Kenbridge Town Council April 16 after a public hearing.

Town Manager Robyn Fowler said in an email that the alleyway, located in the area of Lunenburg Avenue and Shade Street had been owned by the town, but was proposed to be given to adjacent property owners.

“It is not a paved or gravel roadway … now it is just grass and trees,” Fowler said.

Resident Alvin Booth said that his residence adjoins the alleyway. He said a neighbor planned to convert the property into a shed and picnic area. Booth said he did not have any issues with the alleyway decision.

Town Mayor Emory Hodges said the town had abandoned alleyways in the past, typically on alleyway properties the town does not intend to develop in the future.

Hodges said Booth and residents adjacent to the alleyway would get a portion of the alleyway, which stretches through several residences.

“We don’t have any intentions of developing that,” Hodges said about the alleyway.

Residents Nancy Alder and Burt Mackenzie also spoke in support of the decision during the hearing.
