A Victoria man was arrested Friday after hitting a minor multiple times with a baseball bat.

James Arthur Rodwell’s charges included malicious bodily injury and child abuse. Rodwell is currently held at Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville with no bond. The incident occurred at 10th Street in the Town of Victoria.

Victoria Police Department Chief Keith Phillips said Rodwell hit a minor multiple times with a baseball bat. The minor was transported via MedFlight to a hospital for a hematoma to the head, a fractured vertebrae and numerous bruises. Phillips said the minor returned home from hospital as of Sunday and is expected to make a full recovery.

Phillips said Rodwell knew the minor and that the incident occurred at their residence. Rodwell was described by police as a live-in boyfriend of the parent.
