Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

When Bob Mundhenk, owner of RAI Growers Wholesale Nursery, started his wholesale nursery in Victoria he was looking for the right niche to attract local customers. “I started the nursery to benefit the community and surrounding areas,” said Mundhenk. He went on to say, “At the time the closest garden center or nursery was in Blackstone or Farmville.”

Today all your gardening needs can be met by RAI Growers and in 2020 RAI Growers will expand its business to open a retail store. Opening in March 2020, RAI Growers will have a new Nursery/Garden Retail Center in Kenbridge. The new retail store will be located in the old Twigs and Berries store. According to Mundhenk RAI Growers will be open daily and will have nursery items along with other miscellaneous items for sale such as flags, bird houses and other items for the home.

Now that summer is almost over and its time to think about getting your garden ready for fall and winter we asked the question —is it time to prune? “Not Yet, the best time to prune your trees and cut back your shrubs are usually anytime from September to November,” said Mundhenk. “Nothing should be cut in December and January,” continued Mundhenk. Plants need time to adjust and not go into shock from winter. Mundhenk knows what he is talking about.

When giving advice on plants, shrubs, tree and general landscaping 54 years of experience means a lot. Mundhenk has been loving and working with plants for a very long time. Mundhenk said, “I was very young when I grew an interest in plants, putting seeds in the ground and watching things grow.” Mundhenk started as a landscaping contractor in southern California. From there he went to the Florida Keys and eventually ended up in Victoria in 2004.
