Matthew Childers, son of Dawn and Steve Childers of Victoria, earned a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of Washington in August.
Matthew’s doctoral dissertation, “Modeling pathological conformations in transthyretin amyloidosis,” examines – with atomic precision – how proteins form plaques in degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Matthew is a 2009 graduate of Lunenburg County Central Senior High School and a 2013 graduate of the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Currently, Matthew is working as a postdoctoral fellow in the Heart and Muscle Mechanics lab at the University of Washington in Seattle developing new strategies to diagnose and treat cardiovascular diseases.
Matthew is the grandson of Joyce Carter and the late Ernest Carter of Kenbridge and Alton Childers and the late Nancy Childers of Victoria.
