Eighth graders from Lunenburg Middle School had a challenge this spring. In a contest organized by English teacher Candace Barnette, students were encouraged to learn more about the history of Lunenburg County. They did this by reading portions of the Lunenburg Legacy, a survey of local history written by Gay W. Neale of the Lunenburg County Historical Society. After reading, the students each selected three aspects of the county’s history. Then each wrote up an essay, showing how those three aspects contributed to the county’s legacy.

The historical society then chose a handful of judges, who read the papers and chose three winners. This year’s winners include Evelyn Kirkland of Victoria in third place, Ricky Ramirez Morales of Kenbridge in second and in first place is Brodie Bruneau of Victoria. All three winners received a cash prize and award certificates.

The historical society put out a statement congratulating this year’s winners and also saying thanks to “Mrs. Barnette, for her invaluable assistance in working with the students, by encouraging their knowledge of the history of Lunenburg.”
