Williams places in Top 20 at Spring Invitational

Saint Patrick’s Day brought the Hampden-Sydney (H-SC) Spring Invitational back to Farmville and one Kenbridge native helped the Tigers place high. Hampden-Sydney’s B, C and D golf teams all competed in the event, held at The Manor Golf Club. 

The Tigers’ B Team posted a 36-hole score of 604 (291-313) to finish second among eight teams, while the C Team posted a 607 (304-303) to place third, and the D Team posted a 700 (343-357) to finish eighth. The Methodist (North Carolina) University B Team won the event with its 572 (284-288), while Matthew Lyons of nearby Longwood University was the individual medalist at six-under 138 (68-70).

Kenbridge native and Hampden-Sydney senior Cole Williams led the way for the C team, shooting a 77-74-151 on the two-day event. He and teammate Ryan Porterfield tied for 16th overall out of 51 competitors. They were followed by freshman Tucker Smith (77-75–152, T-19th), sophomore Cole Pollard (75-78–153, T-23rd), along with junior Brody Smith (79-79–158, T-34th). Williams tied for third in birdies (8). Porterfield tied for 14th in pars (21) and tied for 18th in birdies (4). Tucker Smith tied for seventh in pars (23). Pollard tied for 19th in pars (20). Brody Smith also tied for 18th in birdies (4).

Meanwhile, Hampden-Sydney’s B team was led by junior Knox Sirmans with a two-day score of 72-75–147 on the par 72, 6,643-yard layout that tied for eighth individually. He was followed by sophomore Pierce Lambert (72-76–148, T-10th), freshmen Owen Sibley (75-76–151, T-16th) and Peyton Lambert (72-86–158, T-24th), along with sophomore Jack Davis (76-87–163, T-40th). Sirmans finished fourth among the tournament field in pars (25). Pierce Lambert tied for seventh in pars (23) and tied for eighth in birdies (6). Sibley tied for fifth in pars (24).

Finally, for Hampden-Sydney, freshman Tucker Poole led the four-man D Team with his two-day score of 81-83–164 that placed 42nd. He was followed by senior Reese Meyer (81-91–172, T-45th), sophomore Jack Craig (91-89–180, 50th), along with freshman Walker Sirmans (90-94–184, 51st). Meyer tied for third in eagles (1).

H-SC will complete its B Team schedule with participation in the Glenn Heath Shipbuilders Memorial Tournament on April 15-16 at the Williamsburg Golf Club in Williamsburg.
