Lunenburg County now has six positive COVID-19 cases.

After the fifth case was reported earlier in the week, Thursday, May 7, a statement from County Administrator Tracy Gee said Virginia Marble Manufacturers, Inc. has reported a worker at the facility has tested positive for the virus and was in quarantine. Gee said it was not known if the person is a resident of Lunenburg County and therefore the fifth case that is being reported by the Virginia Department of Health.

Virginia Marble put out a statement to employees informing them of the positive test results.

“The employee worked in an isolated space in a building outside of Plant 1,” the statement said. “Very few people have been in direct contact with this employee, we have already communicated with all employees that have been in direct contact with said employee.”

The statement said the company has been sanitizing all work areas for the past several weeks.

Gee said two of the five Lunenburg County people who have been diagnosed with the virus have recovered, making the active case count in the county a total of three individuals.

Gee’s statement came before a sixth positive case was posted to the Virginia Department of Health tracking website Monday, May 11.

Lunenburg County has had no one hospitalized due to the virus and no deaths.

The Piedmont Regional Jail (PRJ) continues to battle an outbreak of the virus that has been much smaller than what has been experienced at the two state prisons in Buckingham County.

According to Superintendent Jim Davis, PRJ has had a total of 13 inmates infected with COVID-19 since the first case in mid-April. At this time there are four inmates infected with the virus, and two of the four are hospitalized in Lynchburg. The remaining nine inmates are in various levels of recovery.

The jail has six staff members positive for the virus with two pending test results.
